Alfalfa Sprouts
Alfalfa sprouts are a wonderful raw food that you can grow from
organic seeds in your very own home for pennies!
We all have had alfalfa sprouts on a
sandwich or in a salad. But did you know that these small green wonders
are packed with nutrition and are alkalizing in your body? The vitamins
and minerals inside a seed explode when sprouted. During this process,
the stored starch and protein in the seed are turned into predigested
protein and subtle vegetable sugars. They are in a form that is easily
digested and alkalizing to the body. The cancer fighting phytochemicals
appear shortly after sprouting begins. Some people actually think a
person could live on alfalfa sprouts and have no serious health defects
because they are virtually one of natures superfoods.
These wonderful raw foods are easy to grow at home on your kitchen
counter. To grow alfalfa sprouts, start off with organic seeds. They can
be stored for up to 10 years unopened. After opening, if you keep them
dry and cool, you can store for about 2 years. To begin, consider also
purchasing a sprouting kit or sprouting tray. These devices make it much
easier and safer to grow alfalfa sprouts. They are easier because all
you need to do is water them twice a day and they will take care of
themselves. They are healthier because they allow the seeds to drain
properly so no mold or fungus can grow on the seeds.
Once you have the seeds, soak about 2 tablespoons in clean purified
water for 6 to 8 hours. Next, transfer them to your sprouting kit. Place
the kit in a dark warm cupboard. If you have one above the refrigerator
or stove, that works best. It is important to keep them dark as the
alfalfa sprouts are growing. Twice a day, rinse them again in fresh
clean water and let the tray drain properly. In 4 to 7 days, they should
be about 2 inches long and are ready. Consider exposing them to light
for the final day to let them green a bit. To harvest alfalfa sprouts,
wash them in a vegetable spinner a few times to remove the seeds. Store
them as dry as possible in a sealed plastic bag in your refrigerator.
They will last about a week.
To eat alfalfa sprouts, consider adding them to salads, sandwiches,
wraps, soups, steamed dishes and casseroles. You can also just eat them
plain for a quick snack with other sprouts or raw food. Enjoy your
alfalfa sprouts.
