Bean Sprouts
Growing
bean sprouts at home could not be an easier way to enjoy a fresh
raw food in your recipes.
This week, I grew some bean sprouts at
home for the very first time. They tasted terrific. If you are tired of
getting slimy, stale and expensive bean sprouts from the supermarket,
than keep on reading. I was a bit cautious about trying to grow them at
first. I had tried once before using a glass jar. This did not work so
well and I ended up throwing them out. What was different is now I have
a sprouting tray. Up until this point I had never tried them because my
tray is a bit small. I am glad I did. Now I can make this nutritious and
tasty raw food any week I want to.
First, I went to a local health food store and bought some organic
seeds. Bean sprouts are grown from mung beans. If you have never seen
them, they are about half the size of a dried green pea and about the
same color. I took them home and soaked them overnight in some clean
filtered water. Next, I put them in my sprouting tray (actually mine
consists of 3 round trays stacked on top of each other to make a tower).
Each day, I watered them every 12 hours. I was shocked at how fast the
bean sprouts grew. In researching, I read that most grow for as long as
7 days. Mine were ready at the end of day 5. I tasted them each time I
watered them on day 3, 4 and 5. On day 5, I knew it was time to harvest
because the leaves started to emerge from the seed. So, I washed them,
dried them really well in a salad spinner and now they sit in my
refrigerator.
Bean sprouts really are an easy to grow natural health food. Because I
used my sprouting tray this time, I had no troubles growing them. If I
were to add up the time it took me to take care of them over 5 days, it
is only 25 minutes. That's a pretty small price to pay for such a fresh
raw food prepared right in your own home. One of my favorite things to
do with them is to make a wrap...start with a sprouted whole wheat
tortilla, add some mashed avocado, some lettuce, cucumber, tomato and
fresh bean sprouts. Roll it up and enjoy. These are an excellent meal or
snack that you can have them any time of the day.
