Food High in Antioxidants
New USDA study reveals foods high in antioxidants.
Many people are looking for which foods
are high in antioxidants. We all are aware that we need to get more
vitamins and antioxidants in our diet. On June 09, 2004, a research
paper was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
In this study, 100 different foods were researched to discover which
foods are high in antioxidants. The results may be a bit surprising.
Nature has provided us with some perfect foods for combating free
radicals. These are molecules that are created as a result of stress in
our bodies (chemicals, pollution, noise, bad emotions, poisons, etc) and
as a result of normal body functions. Antioxidants such as vitamins E
and C and some minerals like Selenium combine with the free radical in
such as way as to neutralize them. The more antioxidants, the theory is,
the better we can adapt to stresses on the body. In the study foods in
the categories of fruits, vegetables, nuts and spices were researched.
Can you guess which foods are high in antioxidants?
The study found that in the fruit category, cranberries, blueberries,
and blackberries took top honors. For vegetables, beans, artichokes and
Russet potatoes where the best sources of antioxidants. In the nut
group, pecans, walnuts and hazelnuts were ranked highest. Finally, in
the spice category, ground cloves, ground cinnamon and oregano had the
highest concentrations. Now you can use this knowledge to add some of
these vitamin rich foods high in antioxidants to your diet.
