Home :: Goji Berry

The goji berry is perhaps one of natures most potent antioxidants foods available.

The goji berry is grown in protected areas of Inner Mongolia. They are harvested in a rather unique way. This antioxidant and vitamin E loaded berry can turn black if touched while it is fresh. So, in order to harvest it, mats are placed under the bushes. The branches are shaken until all the ripe fruit falls onto the mats. The goji berry is then left to dry naturally without any preservatives of any kind. Once dried, they are packaged and sent off to be sold to health conscious people around the world. About 6 pounds (3 kg) of fresh berries produce 18 oz's (500 grams) of dried goji berries.

Why are people so interested in the goji berry?

This berry is an amazing antioxidant. The goji berry has 18 different amino acids (amino acids are the building blocks of proteins) and beta carotene. It contains much more Vitamin C than oranges. In fact, 1 pound of goji berries is equivalent to 500 pounds of oranges. In addition, they are an excellent source of Vitamin E, B1, B2, and B6. As you may know, Vitamin E, C and beta carotene are antioxidant compounds. The goji berry also has 21 trace minerals, linoleic acid and other phytonutrients. Another reason the bogi berry is so popular is because it is thought to strengthen the immune system and support the pituitary gland. Also, they have been associated with longevity and sexual potency. Its no wonder the goji berry is popular. Because of all these benefits, many people consider it one of nature's super foods.

Most people will benefit from consuming 10 to 25 grams (about 1 or 2 handfuls) of the goji berry per day. For a 1 oz serving, you will get about 90 calories, 0 fat, 4 grams of fiber, 24 grams of carbs and 4 grams of protein. You can make a wonderful goji berry smoothie. First, take about an oz (1/4 Cup) of dried berries and soak them in 2 cups of water overnight in the refrigerator. Next, blend them very well in a blender. Lastly, add 1 or 2 frozen bananas and blend until smooth. The goji berry has a unique flavor. It takes somewhere between a cranberry and a cherry with a hint of anise or licorice flavor. Try adding some of this antioxidant power packed super food to your diet and see how much better you can feel.

Note: There is some confusion between the Tibetan Goji Berry and Chinese Wolfberries. Make sure you get yours from a source that is authentic. Also, there is goji juice available on the market but that may be heated (pasteurized) to make it last longer. The problem is that during the heating process, the nutrient value of the juice is lessened. If you want to make your own goji juice, use the recipe above and omit the bananas.
