How does a raw vegan diet compare to a vegetarian or alkaline diet?

Lately, the raw vegan diet has been gaining in popularity. It may stem from the fact that more and more research is being done and consequently more books being written about the subject. To start the comparison, it is useful to describe the common definitions of each diet. Once you have the basics of their differences, we can get into the finer details of the raw vegan diet and how it compares.

A raw vegan diet is the combination of a raw food diet and a vegan diet. Most people are familiar with a vegetarian diet. When someone is a vegetarian, they do not eat the meat of animals, birds or fish generally. There is a large variety of people who call themselves vegetarian. For instance, some people, will eat fish but no other meats and call themselves vegetarians. In addition, there is the people who avoid milk products but not eggs. A vegan diet, on the other hand is more strict. These folks avoid all meat products, including egg and dairy products. A raw foodist, is someone who prefers to eat only foods that have not been processed or cooked. Generally speaking, it is assumed that they do not eat meat, dairy and eggs, but that is not always the case. Some do eat raw milk (unpasteurized) and even others will eat organic raw eggs and meats. A person on an alkaline diet is more concerned with the pH of the foods they eat. This is important to them in order to stay properly balanced for weight loss and health reasons. A person on an alkaline diet will be only be eating foods that are alkaline in nature. They may eat some cooked grains, such as quinoa or wild rice for example. Lastly, we come to a raw vegan.

Someone who is a raw vegan will eat only raw foods that are vegan. So, this would mean they eat only fruits, vegetables, sprouts, nuts, sprouted grains/pulses. Why would someone want to do that? Well, research is showing that raw fruits and vegetables contain the maximum amount of nutrition, calorie for calorie. In fact, pound for pound, there is more digestible protein in sprouts and lettuce than in red meat. In addition, people eating an alkaline diet will tell you that increasing your consumption of green vegetables will have an alkalizing effect on your system. Other people have experiences of lowered cholesterol, lower sickness and weight loss by eating a raw vegan diet. No matter what is your preference, it is comforting to know that they all are much better than the typical 'dead-food' loaded diets that most people in the developed countries eat.
